One of the most prized areas under MRT`s management is Cold Creek Preserve. Surrounding Stunt Road in Calabasas, the 2500-acre preserve is visited by thousands of enthusiasts each year who cherish this undeveloped valley and ridges abundant with wildlife, native habitat and panoramic vistas. With nearly 85% of the area being public, native land, Cold Creek Preserve, with its year round water source, sustains one of the most significant wildlife corridors in the Santa Monica Mountains. Because the area has not been disturbed by development it also serves as an outdoor laboratory for education and environmental research.
A $500,000 grant awarded by the 2011 Competitive Natural Land for Trails Grant Program is enabling us to buy the property. This grant program was championed by LA County Supervisor Yaroslavsky, making it possible to start the final phase of completing The Cold Creek High Trail.
However, an additional $100,000 is needed to build a public trail through this spectacular area. To raise this money we are having a Cold Creek High Trail-a-thon.
The $100,000 needed is for:
...making a recreational dream come true in Cold Creek Preserve!By creating a trail through this unique, natural arboretum, the Cold Creek High Trail will extend through the preserve. This new section of the trail will feature a unique grotto, multiple biomes, seasonal wildflowers, panoramic views and shady oak groves.
...restoring the connecting Cold Creek Trail system wiped out in recent rains.
...building bridges for the new trail.
...buying additional available property in the Preserve.
...expand the educational and recreational programs now offered in the Preserve.
