Mountains Restoration Trust has expanded its educational programs to seniors, offering a series of naturalist classes geared toward adult interests. Discover special places within the mountains, learn about local nature and meet others to enjoy the great outdoors with. Our classes offer a range of topics: nature studies, culture, gardening, and walkabouts to enhance your enjoyment of living in or near the Santa Monica Mountains.
The MRT Senior Naturalist Program is being offered through the Calabasas Community Services Department.

Learn about the local history followed by a walk-about along a year-round creek surrounded by oaks and other native plants. Feel the breeze and the sun on our shoulders, smell the country scent while we experience the peace that nature inspires, beckoning us to come back.

We will learn about the night sky with the aid of telescopes. There will be a guest speaker to guide us through the stars, planets, nebulae and constellations. Dress warm.
Native American Culture

Learn about the local Native American Indians that inhabited Calabasas and other parts of the Santa Monica Mountains. These clever people had a use for just about anything and lived comfortably in these mountains for thousands of years. We will see and have a discussion on the use of different native plants, rocks, bones, etc. on a short walk and talk about how they cared for the land. We will make paint from rocks found on the trail, grind acorns, and do a Native American craft. Artifacts will be on display.

Do you know what to do if you get lost while hiking? Anyone, any age, even on a short hike can get lost. This program offers plenty of tips on how to stay safe and comfortable until help arrives. Wear sturdy shoes.
