SHRUB Program
SHRUB (Students Restoring Unique Biomes) Program at Headwaters Corner
Registation Information...
Through a grant made possible by Boeing Company, Mountains Restoration Trust (MRT) is able to offer the SHRUB (Students Restoring Unique Biomes) Program at Headwaters Corner.
SHRUB, a free program (MRT even supplies the bus to transport students) for grades 5 through 8, encourages students to steward the environment by restoring natural habitats. Two student teams adopt a plot of land in a designated area. They plant either seeds and/or small native plants and remove any non-native plants that grow in their designated area. They learn to observe natural elements as they track the progress of the plants they nourish including wind direction, air temperatures, cloud cover, and soil moisture. Students participate in hour-long sessions on geology, flora and fauna, insects, soils, plant adaptation, impacts of invasive species on native plants, animals, the water cycle, and the scientific method. Students gain confidence in public speaking when they share what they have learned with younger students and parents. An interpretive hike is conducted during each session. The program occurs in seven lessons, 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., once per month beginning in September 2009.
SHRUB provides an opportunity for students to give back to their community through service and allows students to learn about science in a real world setting. It also allows students to improve their public speaking skills and introduce students to new experiences and career opportunities in the new “green” economy.

A unique environmental education Workshop for Teachers is being offered for 6thth through 8th grade science teachers, and 5th grade teachers. This free workshop interactively introduces SHRUB (Students Helping Restore Unique Biomes) to teachers so they can see first hand how the environmental education lessons of the SHRUB program combined with its service-learning component result in an education program that allows urban youth to make meaningful and lasting connections to the out doors.
Time spent at the workshop goes toward professional development hours for LAUSD teachers.
